3.17.2005 luck o' the irish? no, el sol d'espaņa

sorry i've been awol the last couple weeks... just haven't felt the urge to write. life does go on outside of the internet, as surprising as that might sound... but in lieu of other posts or a pint o' black gold (guinness, not oil), this post will have a ton o' pics...

one thing definitely not so cool about waiting so long to post something new is the fact that some things aren't as timely anymore. take this picture of aachen under siege by old man winter. this has been a fairly common occurrence this winter, snowing more often and staying longer than all the other winters i've experienced here combined. well, what's not so timely about it? it got real warm this week, and in fact, i went with caroline to a cafe and sat outside having a cappucino cuz it was 17 degrees already.

david gets hip with his new t-shirt

anyways, so where to start about the last 2 weeks? well, emilio left aachen, heading back home to barcelona, as his internship here ended. i had pics of that, i swear, but they all turned out pretty crap. didn't do much anyways, just dinner at pontgarden and then margaritas at sausalitos. you know, the same old.

after that, we celebrated david's birthday, though it was a couple weeks late... whatevs. we went to safran, a turkish diner joint, and watched the second real madrid-juventus match during the first knockout round of the champions league... hence my ronaldo jersey.

yes, it's a wok. yes, it's the gift.

well, besides the fact that madrid lost, i messed up the order of the gifts, and our wok and cookbook didn't draw the reaction we were expecting. not that i really thought it through to begin with, but the personalized t-shirt we gave him contained some clues (like "cooking with your new wok should be fun" or something to that effect), so the whole unwrapping of the gifts was pretty anticlimactic. eh, it's all good. he liked the gift all the same.

i just thought of something kinda odd... i think our football team sorta mirrors that of real madrid. we started the season pretty crap, going winless in the first 6 matches, then we got hot by winning 3 in a row, and now we've lost the last 2 matches... especially bad was last week, where we were undermanned again (only 1 sub) and peter tore some ligament in his knee and david injured his ankle somehow...

francesco (aka paco), natalia and me (l to r)

after the match, i met up with natalia, francesco, toni and yoli for some bar-hopping to drown our sorrows away... hahaha, not really, but we went bar-hopping anyways. they started out at rose, then hofgarten... i joined in at domkeller, and after that, toni and yoli left, but the rest of us continued onto besitos and then cleanicum (half-laundromat, half-lounge)...

the strange irish fellow and the finnish hottie

emilio wasn't the only one to leave this month... glenn, an irish guy, and anna-mari, a finnish girl, both working at ericsson, are leaving (or have left) this week to their respective home countries... we didn't get much chance to hang out together, only for those friday lunches really, but we met up at besitos (actually, it's the reason why natalia, francesco and i went there after domkeller) for a last night out in aachen...

me, anna-mari and glenn, at cleanicum (l to r)

so anyways, a couple more pics cuz i said i'd send some to glenn and anna-mari... in the meantime, chew on this: u2 has some pretty kickass support bands on the european leg of the vertigo tour... it's only one band per show, but still, if you were lucky enough to score tickets to multiple shows, you'd likely catch bands like the killers, franz ferdinand, and my personal choice, keane... how deadly would that be? u2 and keane at the same concert?!? sweet!

glenn, anna-mari, francesco, natalia and me (l to r)

anyhoo, i've taken a couple days off, today and friday... hahaha, it's really just a coincidence that it happens to be st. patrick's day. i'm not planning to chug guinness like it's water, and get crazy mashed... no, i'm going to madrid with mark (hopefully... he was running a 40 degree fever on tuesday) to visit jose, and it's going to be crazy... barbara will be there, yoli is coming in from barcelona, even patricia from gijon is coming down... can't wait!
